For the first time ever, Scarborough Sports Village was the chosen venue for the Special Olympics GB Swimming Gala, Yorkshire and Humberside on Sunday 12th November 2023.
The event was hosted by Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group, officiated by Kingfishers Swimming Club and supported by Special Olympics Hull and Everyone Active.
The teams were from York, Hull, Leeds, Wakefield, Sheffield, Teesside, Peterborough, Bradford, Pontefract and Scarborough and the fantastic news is that some of our service users were in the local Special Olympics team and others who attend Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group have shown an interest to take part next time.
All the local swimmers who entered won a medal in their individual races and the medals and certificates were handed out by the swim star and triple Gold Paralympic, Oli Hynd.
The Scarborough Special Olympic swimmers will be celebrating their achievements at the Annual Swimming Christmas Party on Saturday 25th November 2023, along with other SDSG swimmers who have achieved swim certificates during the year.
Swimmers can enter Special Olympics to compete against other swimmers of similar swimming ability and new swimmers are welcome to join the team every year.
Starting in January 2024, SDSG will extend activities during the week and every week-end thanks to having been successfully awarded a National Lottery Community Grant to develop new wet-side (swimming etc.) and dry side (health and fitness and sport) mainly based at the Scarborough Sports Village.
