Scarborough and District Mencap is a long standing local registered Charity working with people with learning disabilities of all ages. Recently the Charity became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation managed by a Board of Trustees.
Scarborough & District Mencap was founded in 1953 by a group of parents who came together to provide support to the wider community. Our services and groups began in the building that is our main centre today, and over the 67 years we have been in service, we have purchased, extended, and improved the building to keep up to date with the needs of those we serve.

We work closely with our community and have benefited from the generous support of many local businesses, groups, and individuals, through donations and the support of volunteers who help us enhance the services we provide.
Over our years of service, we have begun several initiatives and projects that have gone on to grow and become separate autonomous service provisions. Today there are a good number of organisations within our area that provide support for people with a learning disability.
We provide care for more than 250 people and their families each week through day services, community services, service user led activities, and support for parent carers.
Services are tailored to individual needs using a person-centered approach and in collaboration with Service user needs and wishes alongside parent/carer input and professional guidance and in line with Support Plans.
Activities provided offer choices across a range of areas including creative areas such as music, arts & crafts, fashion, writing, film, photography, performance, singing, dancing, reading, poetry, events, and drama. Active pursuits may include sports, gym, walking, cycling, games, sensory play, and relaxation techniques. Also use of technology and digital communication will be offered and where needed, skills training provided.
We are the longest-operating local service provider and we are unique in owning our large centre, from which we run many of our services, and from where we wish to continue to grow and evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of our community.
We have a well-trained Management and Administrative staff group and structure to ensure quality professional practice and efficient and effective management of services.
Our organisation has experienced and fully trained staff and volunteers who abide by the Health & Social Care Code of Practice in providing care and when supporting and enabling people with a learning disability to engage in their chosen activities.
Scarborough and District Mencap has been assessed as requires improvement by our inspecting organisation, the Care Quality Commission.
