Volunteers

Volunteers are a crucial part of the care we provide to our community. Volunteering is one of the most rewarding things you can do, and volunteering with Scarborough and District Mencap means you will be making a huge difference in the lives of those with Learning Disabilities in our community.

There are many ways you could help by volunteering to work with us. We provide training and support for our volunteers and we would love to hear from you if you would like to be involved with our organisation.

What qualifications do I need to apply for a role as a career?

Care Certificate (all new care team members)

The care certificate training is handed out to new care team members in a specific way detailed below. This training needs to be completed within 12 weeks of starting employment. If the Care Certificate has been completed with a previous employer, we would record a copy of the certificate on our records rather than working through the training again.

What training & support will I receive as a carer at Scarborough and District Mencap?

New team members, including apprentices, students/work experience, and volunteers, all receive a full induction when they start their careers with us. This is carried out on their first day and includes a Health and Safety tour and issuing of our staff handbook and company policies and procedures. 

Each role has specific training requirements and all new team members are given a starter pack that details the training required for their role. Some training may be required for the specific needs of a customer, for example, enteral peg feeding, but there is a large amount of training that is required for all the care roles.   

Do I need to have a driving licence?

We offer a range of outings and activities for service users out in the community, and being able to drive your own and organisation vehicles for work is a big help. However, each Job Description will specify if this is required for specific roles.

What checks will be carried out if I am offered a role?
